COMMON SHELTERS
Le succès rencontré auprès du public en 2006 par Danubian Dreams, présenté à Bratislava sur les rives du Danube, m’a incitée à imaginer un nouveau projet réunissant architectes et designers européens : COMMON SHELTERS.
Cette initiative propose de repenser l’abri au-delà de sa seule fonction protectrice, à travers une approche contemporaine, humaine, écologique et poétique. L’abri devient un espace-temps à part entière : un lieu où se retirer, se retrouver, contempler le paysage ou simplement suspendre le cours du quotidien. Individuel, familial ou collectif, temporaire ou durable, il offre une forme d’intimité conviviale et accueille des moments de quiétude, de rêverie, de partage et de réconfort.
Dans un monde traversé par de profondes mutations environnementales, sociales et géopolitiques, la notion d’abri acquiert une résonance particulière. Elle interroge notre besoin fondamental de protection, mais aussi notre manière d’habiter un territoire, de coexister avec les autres et de prendre soin des milieux qui nous entourent.
Pensé comme un projet évolutif, COMMON SHELTERS se déploie au fil de propositions successives. Chaque créateur est invité à livrer sa propre interprétation de l’abri et de ses usages à partir d’un principe commun : imaginer une architecture sensible et singulière conçue avec 100 palettes, en dialogue étroit avec son environnement.
Ces réalisations composent progressivement une constellation de lieux ouverts, où l’architecture entre en résonance avec la nature et le territoire – en l’occurrence, le Cotentin et ses paysages encore préservés.
Le projet a débuté en 2025 au cap de Carteret avec Le Double Belvédère de matali crasset, une œuvre invitant à contempler ensemble le paysage depuis deux points de vue complémentaires.
À l’été 2026, la deuxième édition présente une nouvelle création de Jakob + MacFarlane, poursuivant cette réflexion collective sur les formes possibles de l’hospitalité, du refuge et du vivre-ensemble.

The public success in 2006 of Danubian Dreams, presented in Bratislava on the banks of the Danube, inspired me to conceive a new project bringing together European architects and designers: COMMON SHELTERS.
This initiative aims to rethink the shelter beyond its purely protective function, through a contemporary, human, ecological and poetic approach. Shelter becomes a space-time in its own right: a place to retreat to, to reconnect, to contemplate the landscape or simply to pause from the daily grind. Whether individual, family-oriented or communal, temporary or permanent, it offers a form of convivial intimacy and provides a setting for moments of tranquillity, daydreaming, sharing and comfort.
In a world undergoing profound environmental, social and geopolitical changes, the concept of shelter takes on a special significance. It explores our fundamental need for protection, but also the way we inhabit a place, coexist with others and care for the environments around us.
Conceived as an evolving project, COMMON SHELTERS unfolds through a series of successive proposals. Each designer is invited to offer their own interpretation of shelter and its uses, based on a shared principle: to imagine a sensitive and distinctive architecture designed using 100 pallets, in close dialogue with its surroundings.
These projects are gradually forming a constellation of open spaces, where architecture resonates with nature and the local area – in this case, the Cotentin and its unspoilt landscapes.
The project began in 2025 at Cap de Carteret with Le Double Belvédère by matali crasset, a work inviting visitors to contemplate the landscape together from two complementary vantage points.
In the summer of 2026, the second instalment presents a new creation by Jakob + MacFarlane, continuing this collective exploration of possible forms of hospitality, refuge and communal living.
